 !  Leif Enjoys the Vinland

In Vinland the sun set at midafternoon, that is Ekerstad.

There was no lack of salmon both in the lake and the river, and this salmon was larger than they had ever seen before.

It seemed to them the land was good, that the livestock would need no fodder during the winter. The temperature never dropped below freezing and the grass only withered very slightly.

The days and nights were much more equal in length than in either Greenland or Iceland. In the depth of winter the sun was aloft by midmorning and still visible at midafternoon.

Sunset indicates Latitude click here to go to page explaining how the sun observtions reveal the latitude of Vinland.

Early translations say the sun set at Ekerstad rather than saying it "was still visible at midafternoon". Knowledge of times of sunrise and sunset on a particular day enable latitude to be determined. Leif was in central Newfoundland.

 !  Comments

Global temperature cycles, and seasonal and regional variations might have produced such a mild winter in Newfoundland on the coast south east of Fogo Island.

The temperature zone there is the same as Boston, and the contiment was almost 4 degrees warmer in the year 1000.
